A Hospital in Nebraska Has Banned the Messy Bun for Nurses

Every now and then, I run across a policy so out of touch that I must share it. Bryan Health in Nebraska has updated its dress code policy to say that nurses are not allowed to wear “messy bun” hairstyles. The reasoning in an email sent out to hospital staff was that the hospital supports clean and neatly managed hair. “Clean and healthy hair” is what the hospital cares most about during a nationwide nursing staffing shortage.

The email came straight out of the hospital manager’s meeting. Of course, it did. It is as if the leaders in the meeting have never worked in a hospital on an actual floor with an actual patient. Hmmm.

Who ever heard of any such thing? When a nurse takes care of me, I am not looking at her hair. I remember when I was in severe pain from a back operation. I did not know what any of my nurses’ hair looked like. All I cared about was the excellent care, physical assistance, and medication upkeep that the nurses provided me. Me and every other patient on the surgery floor were in need…
