“A grandmother is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend.” — Unknown

The COVID-19 Christmas will be hard. I’m a grandmother, so I’m older, I have underlying conditions, I’m isolated. 2020 will be the first time I’m not with family during the holidays since my grandchildren were born. I have not kissed my grandchildren in more than a year.

Both of my children are done with their families. I have three grandchildren. A girl age five from my daughter. A boy age eighteen and a girl twenty-one from my son. That is all I’m going to get. Both of my children are done making babies. I’m a writer — a good one. I will craft unique Christmas handwritten letters for each of my grandchildren and send them via snail mail.

The Baby

Our youngest grandchild is five years old. For her, I brought lined printing paper, the kind you used to teach young children to write the alphabet. We will print in block letters. I’m going to add handmade glitter stickers to her letter reflecting Christmas. My message will be six sentences. For this child, my message is simple and sweet.
