The white male spouse of one of my friends made the most off-hand remark the other day.

My honey and I were having a quick lunch with our friends Mark* and Sarah*, catching up and talking about random things, when Mark mentioned that many farmers in the red states initially were not worried about Trump’s deportation of immigrants.

He said that these farmers believed that unemployed Black people would race back to the farm fields to fill those jobs. Mark repeated the same statement about low-paying, back-breaking service and construction jobs.

Mark almost left me speechless. Almost. I asked him what gave them the impression Black people were sitting around eating bonbons, waiting for immigrants to be deported so we could take jobs no one else wanted.

I must have looked crazy as he turned bright red before answering; he was always under the impression Black unemployment was endemic, somewhere in the 50 to 60% range. Mind you, now this is a white man married to a successful Black woman lawyer.
