I hear you. I had my son when I was a teenager. I too escaped but you never forget. The other day I watched a nicely dressed young woman with a baby struggling to pay for her groceries. The majority of the items were for the baby. The woman behind me was muttering about how nice she looked while using food stamps. I didn’t say anything to the craziness behind me. Instead I covered the overage in young woman’s groceries so she did not need to put anything back. I remember how it felt to need food I could not afford.
