My House Is Turning into a Diva
We had many good years together before the change
Unlike many baby boomers, my home still has a mortgage. When interest rates were low, we refinanced our remaining balance for 30 years, giving us a low mortgage payment.
We bought the house in 2001 when it was two years old. A man custom-built the house for his fiancée, but they never married. You could tell he was angry about that. When he sold the house, he removed the custom lighting fixtures from the dining room, bedroom, and living room. Wires were protruding from the ceilings and walls.
It was obviously a do-it-yourself equipment removal. Since we are both electrical engineers, the hanging wires were no challenge to us — we negotiated the cost down and bought the beautiful house. It was precisely what every DIY engineer dreams of: a newly purchased house with a trip to Home Depot built in.
We loved the high ceilings, a 10-foot sliding glass door and pool, and open floor plan. The house had four palm trees and gorgeous landscaping. He painted her a “guy color” throughout: light brown — the color of new baby poo. Before we moved in, I had her repainted in a light golden cream.
The house has small, beautiful custom details throughout, from the backsplash on…
