I have a group of friends I have known most of my life. The shortest relationship in this group is forty years. We met in overlapping groups of three. One friend was a childhood buddy. Then three of us went to college together. Then a different group of three worked together. Eventually, we became a bonded group of four who enjoyed each other’s company.
We bonded with each other when the heat was on women to “bring home the bacon then fry it up in the pan.” The pressure on us to be everything to everyone was tremendous. We were expected to perform every role perfectly. Wife, mother, daughter, sister, cook, lover, nurse, friend, and provider were to be executed flawlessly. ”Never let them see you sweat“ was our motto.
